Karakorum Starlet led at every point of call to win the $81,650 Union Avenue Stakes for New York-breds on Monday at Saratoga Race Course and earn her first stakes win. Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Karakorum Starlet shook off Baby Gray on the turn and held off a late bid from runner-up Scatkey to win by a length. The field was reduced to five with the scratches of Stolen Star and 8-to-5 morning-line favorite Magnolia Jackson.
Trained by Jeff Odintz for Karakorum Stables, Karakorum Starlet completed six furlongs in 1:10.95 on a track rated as fast. “There was no plan today. I let Kent do whatever he wanted,” Odintz said. “She was out there all by herself, and I had a hot
jock on her today. What’s better than that?” The Union Avenue was Desormeaux’s sixth stakes victory of the meet for five different trainers. On July 12 at Belmont, Desormeaux was unseated when Karakorum Starlet stumbled out of the gate in a one-mile race. “She settled in early,” Desormeaux said. “I was just so happy to be able to return the favor. I fell off her the one time, when she went over her head. She fell, too, but I still wish I could have held on because she probably could have done that and still won. Today, she was acting herself and in the stretch, she just kept doing enough.”
Karakorum Starlet entered off a fifth-place finish in the 11⁄8- mile Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga on August 1. “I tried her long last time, and she showed us she didn’t really want to go that far,” Odintz said. “I thought she could probably go six furlongs, but her best distances are from seven-eighths to a mile. I was glad she got the job done today.”
